I know it’s easy to look at the beauty of a fresh snowfall through our living room windows, pour a cup of hot coffee or perhaps a bourbon, and sit back in the easy chair by a roaring fire and read a good book on days like these. And don’t get me wrong – I love doing this as much as the next person. But… when I convince myself to put on some boots, a warm fleece, hat, and gloves to hit the woods and hike for a while, I’m never disappointed. Fact is, a winter’s day with moderate temps, no wind, and solid ground is probably my favorite season of the year to hike.
And the perfect companion on these hikes is your camera. The winter landscape is unlike any other time of year and subjects take on a dynamic and simple appearance. Snow and ice formations, wildlife, and snow-covered trees abound with photo opportunities. And if you’re hiking a public trail area, chances are you’ll have it to yourself, as most people will be doing what I mentioned earlier 🙂 The perfect time to let your mind wander and relax in the quiet beauty and stillness that surrounds you.
Here are a few tips and things to remember that will make your outing fun and memorable;
- Dress in layers – don’t overdress as you’ll overheat.
- Pack a few snack bars and water.
- Map of the area as well as a compass.
- Cellphone.
- Let your spouse or a friend know where you’ll be hiking and when to expect you back home.
- Matches and lighter.
- Camera. Extra battery. Lens cloth. Large plastic ziplock bag (to put your camera in before entering a house or warm environment on your return. This prevents moisture buildup on the sensor and lens components).
This list is by no means comprehensive, and everyone packs to their own comfort level. My philosophy is to always bring what I may need without weighing me down. I like to be able to move and climb freely, not feel like a pack mule 🙂
If you haven’t experienced hiking in the wintertime, especially after a fresh snowfall, I highly encourage you to force yourself out of that easy chair next time – I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Wishing all of you a Happy New Year and Happy Trails! Till next time…….
