Two great and rewarding activities I love, hiking and reading a great book, can often be enjoyed separately or together. Unless you’re focused on covering ground as quickly as possible (which isn’t my style or desire), I occasionally throw a book in my pack when I hit the trail. Why? Well, I like to take breaks along the way. Sometimes just to let the surroundings soak in, enjoy a little lunch, and read a bit. It’s just about being outside in a pristine environment on a beautiful day.
What to read? Doesn’t matter. Pick something you’re into. The book pictured here (an incredible account of Sigurd F. Olson’s time exploring the Boundary Waters) was a gift from my Mom many years ago. She provided and encouraged my love for the outdoors, hiking, and reading in particular. Even though I had read this fascinating story before, it is worth a second read, and I took it on several outings over the summer and fall. It’s just part of why I hike in the first place – to find peace, relaxation, and solitude.
Of course, right now it’s January in Missouri and we’re experiencing some pretty intense cold temps, so the hiking has been curtailed somewhat for a while. But sitting next to a roaring fire with a great book about the outdoors is as good of a substitute as there is!
I hope this finds you doing well and enjoying the New Year! Wishing you many beautiful days afield filled with lasting memories!
Happy Trails! Missouri Mike
